5 Design Trends for 2018

Happy New Year!

January is the perfect time to refresh your space. If you’ve been following my Houzz or Instagram then you may have seen some of the newest trends that I have been incorporating into some of my transitional/contemporary customers’ homes towards the end of this past year. I wanted to share some of my favorite trends with you guys!

My 5 design trends for 2018:

Monochromatics:

This year, the neutral trend will continue to be king. Neutrals are safe and are projected to not go out of style. Beiges and greys are your neutral bases – use combinations of tones of grey and beige throughout your space to give dimension. Also, mix in lots of texture and patterns in your rugs, pillows, and drapery for extra interest and that designers-touch.

Bright Whites:

Let’s be real, white is never going to go out of style. This year, contemporize your spaces by brightening up your upholstery with white fabrics and using it as a canvas for brighter color pops.

Durable Materials:

Speaking of doing more whites in your space, please do it in a safe way. There are so many ultra-durable fabrics to use these days. There are outdoor fabrics that can be used indoor, and new Crypton fabrics which are basically indestructible and can be cleaned with soap and water. This entire home was done in white Crypton slipcovers, so even if they can’t spot clean small accidents they could still strip these and take the slipcovers to the dry cleaners!

Minimizing Color:

Don’t be mistaken, I don’t mean to eliminate color from every room. I simply mean to choose one or a maximum of two colors as accent colors to go with more neutral base pieces. You can see in these photos I have all black and white furniture with a huge pop of teal paint on the wall, or all white furniture with colorful pillows. This is going to give your space a more refined look and not hodge-podged together.

Color trends:

Keep up with color trends. This is the easiest way to keep your home from looking outdated. Popular colors right now are teal, navy, dusty blue, and emerald green. These go hand-in-hand with the white, taupe, beige and grey neutrals I talked about earlier. I’ll do a post following this one about colors that have gone out of style and need to be updated.
